Hello everybody!
On behalf of GKIDS and NY Int'l Children's Film Festival, we are absolutely THRILLED to be able to present the newest film from Studio Ghibli and legendary director and studio co-founder Isao Takahata. For those of you checking your email this Saturday morning, I wanted to write a personal note about this movie. I believe Princess Kaguya will be remembered as one of the greatest animated films of all times. Takahata has created a moving and deeply felt film, immensely beautiful, sensitive, funny, and simply a joy to watch. Far more than pure entertainment, the movie delves deep into the heart of the viewer to convey essential truths about what it means to be a human. The hand-made animation "trembles with soul." It is "a masterpiece," "astonishing," "a visionary tour de force" and "as beautiful and imaginative as anything Studio Ghibli has created." It is rare that critics use these kinds of words to describe an animated film, and if you read the full reviews you will appreciate how deeply the movie has touched early audiences at the Cannes and Toronto film festivals.
In the many years I have been involved with NYICFF and GKIDS, I have had the pleasure to bring hundreds of wonderful movies to US audiences. This one is special to me. I hope you will come to see it opening weekend, and bring your friends, your kids, your grandparents, your teachers, your students, your neighbors - to experience a wonderful movie but also to support the kind of filmmaking that NYICFF and GKIDS were founded to champion.
