The Review! |
 |
 |
 |
When I first
popped this title into my DVD player my initial reaction was “oh
great, another crappy Baki the Grappler show” but after the OVA
ended, I felt it had enough idea to keep it entirely out of
generic fighting anime no. 379834. Originally the more ungainly
title High School Exciting Story: Tough, Shootfighter Tekken
focuses on the spikey head protagonist of Kiichi Miyazawa who’s
not too far removed from the vein of Uzumaki Naruto of Naruto fame
as your typical wiseass character who eats like a bear during
hibernation and trains like he’s about to go to the Olympics.
Under the tutelage of his stoic father
Oton Kiichi has learned of the deadly Nanshin Shadow Style martial
art which can kill a man internally. Oton knows this art can only
be practiced by those that know the meaning of life and death, yet
teaches Kiichi the ropes of the art in hopes he may someday
succeed him. Meanwhile Oton’s old rival Iron Kiba challenges Oton
to a match again. You see, Kiba and Oton had a underground
fighting match which resulted in Kiba losing an eye. Despite this
he’s build a reputable business as a Pro Wrestler. Oton refuses
but though Kiichi’s doing it begins a new match up between one of
Kiba’s best grapplers against Otons own son in a fight to the
death on international waters.
Animation wise, it’s decent, more and more
you keep seeing animation houses in japan start doing their
animation in digital cel form, and this is no different. It’s
clear, clean, and shiny as hell. Comparing it to traditional
painted cel animation will defiantly show the difference between
the two. As for the DVD extras, just like the Ichi the Killer
anime before it, it just lacks anything good, just your standard
trailers and manga trailers and a short art gallery.
So far this show has piqued my interest, I
would like to see where this series is going and if the going does
indeed get better from here on out. It’s brutal, I won’t lie to ya;
some times it’s made me whence at stuff that shouldn’t be so bad.
It’s like Fight Club in animation. Heads getting dented, limbs
going in the wrong direction, and now the Shootfighter trademark:
X-Ray shots during internal snaps of ligaments or bones. The sound
alone will make you shiver at how sickening it gets. Kiichi is a
interesting character, and his relationship with his friends is
revealed in a few flashbacks to a earlier fight where Kiichi used
the nanshin art against his motorcycle riding friend in a
graveyard. I hope they come back to that scene later in the
series, it did look interesting.
Ok, I’m way off the point here, to put it
bluntly, bad title, decent show. |
