Together with his best friend Hiro, Shuichi’s formed a band called “Bad Luck” and they’ve even managed to get signed to a major recording label! Unfortunately, the studio deadlines are looming and Shuichi still hasn’t finished the lyrics for any of the songs. What he needs is a little inspiration… but he’s been running a little low in that department lately. While Hiro recommends finding a girlfriend, fate has other things in store for him…

Walking through the park late one night, Shuichi‘s latest lyrics flutter away and land at the feet of a stunning stranger that takes his breath away. Unfortunately, that mysterious stranger happens to be the famous novelist Eiri Yuki, who completely crushes the young singer by telling him he has “zero talent”. Now, Shuichi’s so annoyed that he’s managed to finish his song just so he can find and confront Yuki once again. But, are his actions really motivated by anger, or has he actually fallen in love?

» The Review!

Episode #1

Shuichi and Hiro, along with their manager Shinjo find out that their new group Bad Luck is going to opening for a major group called ASK. The only problem is that Shuichi hasn’t finished the lyrics to the song they’re supposed to be singing! Everything he writes sounds horrible, he needs a muse and fast. While waling through the park the wind blows his song lyrics into the face of a handsome stranger who tell Shuichi he has “zero talent”. Who is this mysterious man? Will Shuichi finish his song or should he give up and admit the man is right? Will Bad Luck be able to perform successfully at the concert?

Episode #2

It’s Bad Luck’s first show. Shuichi is having some problems in his relationship with Eiri. Eiri seems to not care about Shuichi anymore. Eiri’s sister tries to buy Shuichi in order for him to persuade Eiri in her favour of something, but Shuichi refuses. When Eiri finds out he gets very angry, and doesn’t believe that Shuichi refused and throws him out. Shuichi’s favourite idol Ryuichi Sakuma is back in town as well. Will Eiri end up believing Shuichi? Will the concert go well? And why is Ryuichi Sakuma coming to see Bad Luck perform?

Episode #3

Tohma, the president of N-G music decides that Bad Luck needs a third member. Shuichi doesn’t understand this and goes into a rampage, getting especially angry when Hiro seems to agree with Tohma. Shuichi gets very hurt and disillusioned after hearing the new member, Suguru Hujisaki play and finding out he is very good. Will Shuichi be able to accept the Hujisaki or will this mean the end of Bad Luck?

Episode #4

Shuichi moves into Yuki’s house without an invitation and surprisingly Yuki lets him stay, but just for one week. That day Bad Luck scores their first TV appearance as….contestants on a quiz show?!? Unfortunately, their rivals ASK are on a real music program the same day. Will Bad Luck make fools of themselves on TV? Will ASK steal all their ratings?

Ok, this is one messed up anime. Firstly, I totally thought that the cover showed a girl and a guy. Then I heard Shuichi’s voice…definitely not a girl. So a note to you all, Gravitation is a Yaoi anime. The cover art however, still is pretty nicely done. The theme music definitely grew on me as time passed, and I could feel my head bopping along with it. It’s neat how you get to see the evolution of the theme song through the episodes.

The plot line itself is a little off the wall, and almost every episode ends with a the two guys kissing. I really liked the unique animation style of the opening scene. It was quasi realistic at some points and I thought it gave things a really neat twist.

The special features on the DVD include trailers for some of rightstuf’s other works, an art gallery of character sketches, character profiles of the Bad Luck members and some really really handy linear notes to help you understand all those Japanese references and jokes. The DVD is also equipped with two audio options, you can either have the Jap audio with Eng subs or English Audio.

This series takes a while to pick up and for a bit you’ll probably just be confused but it is somewhat interesting once it does take off.
