Comic Party has always been considered one of those series that
would never get licensed. One of the reasons, it’s about the world
of doujinshi! And if you don’t know what that means I suggest you
take a look at
this link here…. Go on. Expand your mind… then return back
here. You back? Great, let us continue. Doujinshi, a marketing
department’s nightmare, well not for Right Stuf apparently,
they’ve seem to have slapped together a rather interesting package
that’s just as fun as the feature it’s self.
As mentioned above, Comic Party is the story of our main hero
Kazuki, who is unexpectedly toss into the world of creating
doujinshi, basically fan made manga, similar to fan fiction (I had
feeling some of you didn’t click the link). And who else but the
obsessed otaku Taishi to do this to him. For a certain reason, he
insists that Kazuki must learn how the whole system works, in
order for them (rather him) to take over the world using this form
of media…apparently Taishi is forgetting he’s still a high school
senior. After going to his first convention, and meeting new
friends Kazuki does indeed make the choice to enter into this new
way of fandom. However his childhood friend Mizuki, a real anime
hater, objects to this very much. Since his new hobby is cutting
into the time he’d normally spend with her.
Unlike most animes out their that have large a amount of off the
wall humor. Comic Party manages to come up with story that’s still
gripping and shows just what it’s like to be an unknown manga
artist, trying to work their way up to the top. Believe it or not,
if you’ve tried to make it big in the doujinshi world, you’ll be
able to relate to what our characters here go through. It’s almost
like they saw your life, and made it into anime. Yet on top of all
the realistic elements and interesting story, we still get non
stop laughter. Especially from Taishi, who’s quite the nut bar,
making long speeches like he’s some great military leader or
something.
Another great mix that’s thrown in here is the vast amount of
parodies from other animes! The first minute or two of the first
episode has Kazuki stuck in the middle of an episode of Too Heart…
or is it the game? Since the characters respond with the same line
over and over ever time he tries for explain him self. This is to
be expected in games when you do that without triggering a certain
event to make them say something else. But enough of games talk, I
do that enough at
Gaming Media.
Speaking of parodies, the packaging along is loaded with them. The
cover’s were printed in the traditional manga style… in other
words it opens backwards. Of course they’re revisable, so if you
want to open it the “right” way you can. Upon opening the cover
you be exposed to even more parodies, being the insert… I’ll let
this pic here explain everything.

Yep, Right Stuf went all out to enhance what the series is famous
for, as well as the world of doujinshi. Another great thing about
the insert is the list of some of the parodies you’ll find while
watching this, great guide indeed.

Well the packaging work here seems to be fine, but how do the
menus work? Quite well in fact. At first they seem a bit
motionless, until we glance our eyes on an image of one of the
characters being sketched right there on the screen! It was
certainly a mind blowing experience, likely one of the most
creative menus I’ve seen in a very long time. The opening song
also plays out in the background as well, giving it more of a nice
feel, since there really isn’t anything else going on. All the
other menus get your standard treatment here, nothing special, but
access to everything you’d expect.
And the extras? Dear good, they’re wonderful, consisting of an Art
Gallery of character sketches, Character bios, translator notes
explaining certain things in the series. An interview with some of
the Japanese voice actors, which proves to be just as funny as the
series is. Oh yes, and the Special Mini episode #1, packed with
even more laughs.
I don’t have much to say about the video, it’s more or less
prefect for something that was released about… what? 3 years ago?
None the less, everything here is in nice order. Same can be said
about the audio, in its typical 2.0 Mix. Nothing objectionable
noted here, well the English track does sound a bit better quality
wise mind you. Speaking of the English track, the dub here was
done rather well.
From crazy parodies, to nice packaging to some killer features,
Comic Party here has proven to be a worth wild adventure,
defiantly one of Right Stuf’s best releases ever. Needless
to say, I’m ready for another injection; well not just yet… for I
have a craving to watch this again just for the fun of it. |
