» Description
"Now on DVD from U.S. Manga Corps! From the creator of Project A-Ko! She's sexy, suave and sophisticated, but she's no bimbo. She's a martial arts expert and a jet fighter pilot with the body of a supermodel. She's Aika, and she's one of the best secret agents in the business. Armed with her trusty, semi-sentient super-battle bustier, no risk is too great! Included 4 episodes!"

» The Review!
Being one of the first DVDs I picked up when I finally got on the DVD bandwagon. I had no idea what to expect when I started watching this. I knew it was something that was going to be off the wall…but whoa!

In this first volume of Agent Aika (Titled Naked Mission… likely because she is naked half the time) we are introduced to two things, one of course is our main characters… and the other. The setting, the setting being a world in which every woman wears rather short mini skirts… Which result into so many panty shots that it is almost desensitizing, in good way of course. The series follows the adventures of Aika and her friend Rion, two salvagers that probe in the deep oceans which now cover 90% (Or something like that) of the surface of the Earth. Their job, searching for lost technology that was never recovered during a great disaster that hit the Earth. Later they accept a job which is to gather information on something known as Lagu… However, this ends up upsetting a large group of women and they come after them. Did I mention they wore really short skirts? And they kick really high?

Not to give away too much of the plot on this disc. (Or lack thereof) Let’s just say... Agent Aika is not one of those series that you would watch for the story -- Just the guilty pleasures that come from it. There’s some character development and interaction here and there, much of it is better than the overall story… But it still lacks in certain areas. It would have been nice to know more about Aika’s past rather that it briefly being talked about towards the end. And more about some of the characters as well, everything just starts up all in the first episode, and it just goes on from there as if we know all about these people.

As for the voice acting… ack! Well for the English dub at least. Don’t get me wrong, I’m an avid listener of English dubs, and I’ve heard some bad ones in my day, but this one just takes the cake. Much of the characters voices are poorly done, with very little expression in their words. It is almost as if they had no voice acting experience what so ever. Needless to say I watched the whole thing subbed and did not even bother listening to the rest of the dub (Expect when it came to watching this for this review.)

On the more technical side of things, this DVD does score some passing marks. The menus, though plain and simple do look like they had some effort put into them. Not too many extras in this though, just a few promotion spots for other CPM DVDs and an amusing Japanese music video. Then of course there’s the DVD-ROM extras which CPM tends to put in all their DVD releases. There’s a meet the characters extra as well which gives you a bit of info on the characters that will be seen on the disc. It's nothing all that however. Overall the extras are not anything to get excited over, but are not bad at the same time.

The video transfer is descent; I did not see any glitches or problems watching this at all. Despite the fact that this OVA was released back in 1997, the animation quality is not all that bad. The like the video, the audio is straight forward, no major problems in it, for both the Japanese audio and the English. It’s more or less what you’d expect from a typical DVD release.

After the 2 hours I spent watching this, 2 hours of non stop panty shots and the odd nude scene. I'm shocked that much of my brain was still intact to say that this disc isn’t really all that to get excited over. As what was said above, watch this for the pointless fan service. You watch it for the story and you’ll be temped to use the disc as a Frisbee. Okay maybe that was a bit too much -- But this certainly is not the most well thought-out and planned OVA series.

» Bottom Line
Animation: 6 / 10
Story: 6 / 10
Audio: 7 / 10
Video: 8.5 / 10
Extras: 8 / 10
Impact Rating: 7 / 10

Total: 70%
